Rubanda District authorities have disbursed over Shs350 million to support vulnerable groups under various government livelihood programmes aimed at boosting household incomes and improving economic empowerment across the district.
The funds were distributed to beneficiaries across all 17 sub-counties under the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and elderly support initiatives.
According to district officials, Shs29.6 million was allocated to seven elderly groups, Shs64.9 million to 17 PWD groups, Shs57.1 million to 16 youth groups under YLP, and Shs200.7 million to 37 women groups under UWEP.
The programmes are intended to enhance livelihoods, promote financial independence, and reduce poverty among vulnerable communities in the district.
Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba expressed concern over rising crime, particularly cattle theft, warning that it threatens government efforts to improve household incomes.
“We are concerned about rising crime, especially cattle theft. Such acts undermine government efforts to uplift our communities,” Kasyaba said.
He, however, highlighted improvements in service delivery, noting that the district has recruited more health workers and procured medical equipment for Bufundi Health Centre IV, with plans to equip Ruhija Health Centre IV.
Kasyaba also urged residents to focus on development and unity in driving progress.
“Politics is over. Let us work together to develop Rubanda District,” he said.
District Chief Administrative Officer Samuel Ahabwe and the District Community Development Officer cautioned beneficiaries against misusing the funds, citing low recovery rates under the youth programme as a concern.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner Hilary Bindeba assured residents of strengthened security measures, saying joint operations by security agencies, including planned roadblocks, are underway to curb livestock theft.
“We are implementing joint efforts by security agencies, including planned roadblocks, to curb livestock theft,” Bindeba said.
